The Internet is a network connecting computers. After a long period of competition, the Internet connectionless packet switching technology has become the mainstream, which ensures that the transmission of the Internet can be achieved in the most efficient way. The third is routing control. On the basis of relatively stable transmission format and conversion mode, routing control must constantly meet the needs of different applications and different means of communication, communication mode changes, in order to achieve the optimal network.
Winden Cerf, the inventor of the Internet architecture and Turing Award winner, pointed out that at the beginning of the design of the Internet, the prototype must satisfy the following conditions:
First, the Internet must be universal for any application, not for any special application, but to support voice, video, IP phone... Any application.
Secondly, information transmission over the Internet can be compatible with any communication technology, including electronic circuits, microwave, optical fibers, wireless, 3G/4G/5G...
Thirdly, to allow innovation on the edge of the network, there is no need to change the network structure to add any new applications and services. This is the advantage of narrow-waist structure. The basic structure remains unchanged, and the application can expand infinitely.
Fourth, it can be extended. The Internet needs to support the continuous expansion of the scale of users. Now the number of connected users on the Internet is nearly 4 billion, and the address space of IPv4 is insufficient. Therefore, the development of IPv6 is imperative.
Fifth, the Internet is open to any new protocol, new technology and new applications. The compatibility, openness and extensibility of the Internet determine that it is an evolving, expanding and growing network. Routing control is the most important area of Internet innovation.
With the trend of artificial intelligence and interconnection of all things, there will be more and more applications on the Internet. Iteration from IPv4 to IPv6 is the general trend.
The international organization promoting the development of Internet technology is IETF (The Internet Engineering Task Force). The top leadership of the organization is IAB (Internet Architecture Board), the Internet Architecture Working Group, whose mission is to ensure the smooth development of the Internet. IAB has established the inevitable trend of Internet evolution from IPv4 to IPv6 all over the world. The main purpose of IETF is to find problems and solve them pertinently, so as to establish them as international standards. As of June 30, 2018, IETF has completed 8439 RFCs (Request For Comments), of which 101 are led by China. It can be seen that China is still a beginner in the field of Internet architecture and key technologies, and has limited voice.
IPv6 is an important opportunity for China to participate in the development of global Internet technology. In order to further promote related work, China has established an action plan to promote the scale deployment of the next generation Internet, further clarifying the necessity, main objectives, key tasks and safeguards for the development of the next generation Internet. It calls for "deepening the development of IPv6 from the five major areas of Internet application, network infrastructure, application infrastructure, network security and key frontier technologies". In particular, it emphasizes the need to strengthen network security, safeguard national information network security, break through key frontier technologies, and build an independent innovation of the next generation of Internet technology industry.
